Explaining Capitalism is a website that exists for the purpose of debunking anti-capitalist propaganda, including the hysteria about U.S. wealth and income inequality, as well as fighting the creep of socialism. Explaining Capitalism is produced by Austro-Libertarian economic analyst Jesse Colombo, who is a millennial who became known for warning about the 2008 financial crisis as a university student.
Since the Great Recession a decade ago, public sentiment has turned against capitalism as Americans (especially millennials) blame it for some of our society’s most pressing problems: growing income and wealth inequality, soaring healthcare and education costs, the student debt crisis, underemployment, high living costs and gentrification in cities, and more.
These serious issues have led to a rapidly-growing left wing economic movement that is calling for socialism, universal basic income, wealth redistribution, and, increasingly, outright communism. This left-wing movement kicked off with Occupy Wall Street in 2011, led to the 2016 presidential campaign of socialist Bernie Sanders (which was very popular with young Americans), and has now contributed to the rise and growing clout of far-left politicians including Elizabeth Warren, who is calling for an annual wealth tax, and 29-year old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who is calling for a 70% top marginal tax rate.
As an advocate for free markets, sound currency, and limited government, Jesse Colombo uses Explaining Capitalism to counter the arguments made by America’s growing left-wing economic movement. Jesse explains that our economic problems are not caused by capitalism, but are actually a byproduct of central banking (ie., the U.S. Federal Reserve), the fact that the U.S. dollar is now a pure fiat or “paper” currency that is constantly being devalued, and market distortions created by government intervention and subsidies. Unfortunately, capitalism is being blamed for these problems that have nothing to do with it. Jesse is here to set the record straight.
